Permits for Essex County relocation: Where to get them and when to start?

Before your Essex County move, check where the truck can legally stop and whether your building requires a reservation. The answer depends on the address, parking restrictions, vehicle and work involved. Do not assume every move needs a permit, or that a permit from one municipality covers another.

A driveway move, a reserved public parking space and a container placed in a roadway can raise different questions. Start with the town’s parking or municipal office and describe the actual plan. Separately, ask the property manager about loading access, elevators and insurance paperwork.

Montclair: check temporary no-parking signs early

For residential moving under §228-5 D(1), Montclair’s current parking code requires temporary no-parking signs to be purchased at least 10 days before the reservation and posted 24 hours in advance. Moving applications require proof of a signed lease or ownership deed. Different location categories have different provisions, so confirm which applies to your curb with the Parking Utility.

The code lists a minimum purchase of two signs, with $50 for the first sign and $25 for each additional sign for a 24-hour period. Confirm the total and current rates with the Parking Utility before paying; fees can change. These are municipal charges, separate from your moving estimate.

For other Essex County towns, confirm the address-specific process

For a move in Caldwell, Livingston, Millburn or another town, ask the municipal office to direct you to the department responsible for your proposed parking or street use. This article does not establish a permit requirement or fee for those towns.

Have these details ready:

• Both addresses, the moving date and proposed loading hours.
• Whether the truck will use a driveway, metered space, restricted curb or travel lane.
• The truck’s size and any vehicle information the office requests.
• Whether you plan to use a portable storage container.
• The amount of space you need, based on the actual truck and access route.

Ask which application, deadline, fee and posting rules apply. Request the official form or written instructions. Begin these checks as soon as you know your date; a two-week planning allowance is useful, but it is not a universal deadline or a guarantee of approval.

Agree on who handles each task

Before moving day, confirm with your mover who applies for any required permission, pays the fee, obtains vehicle details and posts or removes signs. Do not assume those services are included in an estimate.

Check building and HOA requirements separately

Ask your property manager for written moving instructions. A building may require an elevator reservation, certificate of insurance, loading appointment or deposit. The amount and allowed hours are property-specific; there is no deposit range or weekday schedule that applies to every Essex County building.

Confirm the entrance, elevator dimensions, protection requirements and where the crew can unload. Share these details with your mover and, if applicable, the team providing packing services.

Before the truck arrives

Keep any approvals available, follow their posting instructions and check that the reserved access matches the approved location and time. Do not improvise a reserved space with cones or signs without authorization.

If an application is delayed or rejected, ask the responsible office about the next available option. Do not rely on same-day approval. Coordinate a lawful alternative or a revised schedule with your mover and property manager.
