How to Freshen Up Your Home This Spring

2 min read

Bright, tidy living room in a freshly cleaned home

You have settled into the new place, and mostly it feels wonderful. One thing still nags at you, though, and it is not the cartons waiting to be unpacked. It is the way the rooms smell, a little off no matter how much you admire your new address.

Before you rush out for aerosol sprays and plug-in fresheners from the supermarket or hardware store, let us suggest a gentler route. Those products lean on synthetic chemicals that do your household few favors and are hard on the planet too. A few ingredients already in your kitchen can handle the job instead.

Four easy ways to sweeten the air

Spritz it

Stir a drop or two of vanilla or almond extract into a cupful of water. Pour it into a spray bottle and mist each room when it needs a lift.

Simmer it

For stubborn odors, pour plain white vinegar into a small pot and let it bubble on the burner for around forty minutes. Want something cozier? Simmer a bit of orange peel with a teaspoon or so of cinnamon in water and let the aroma drift through the house.

Scatter it

Kitchen bins are notorious offenders. Lift out the liner, tip a bit of baking soda onto the bottom of the can, then settle the bag back in place. Do this weekly and the sour smells stay gone.

Squeeze it

Right before you run the vacuum, squeeze a fresh lemon and add a few drops of that juice to its bag or dust cup. As you clean, the citrus works into the carpets and leaves the floor smelling bright.
