A move often doubles as a chance to hit the reset button. If you want to enter the next place with a lighter load and a clearer head, paring down what you own is the right spot to begin. We see it every week, and we are glad to share how we would tackle it.
Keep in mind that carrying your things across town or across the country costs real money, and every extra item pads the total. Think of the cartons you must buy, stuff, tape shut, and mark, then a crew hauling each from doorway to doorway. Those quantities stack up fast. Shrink the pile and you shrink both the invoice and the mental weight that follows you to the new address.
Start early and sort in stages
Rushing rarely works. Give yourself roughly half a year before the truck arrives, and hit the trickiest zones first: closets, attic, and basement. As you go, build three groups and label each one plainly.
- Keep: the things you genuinely cannot part with.
- Donate: whatever you would happily pass to Purple Heart or another local charity.
- Maybe: the odds and ends still awaiting a verdict.
Pack as you go, and let the rest earn its keep
The moment a “keep” group is settled, box it up. Working in small rounds spreads the effort out and spares you a scramble on the big day. If boxing is not your idea of fun, our packing services crew can lift that chore off your shoulders.
Do not overlook the cash in your “donate” group, either. Turn it into a “sell” group, host a weekend yard sale, and pocket a few dollars. Steer the proceeds toward a cause you believe in, or toward the first bills at your new place.
